GUARD DUTY DURING THE QUARANTINE
I no longer carry a weapon locked and loaded—
merely my grandfather’s blackthorn shillelagh
as I march back and forth in my backyard
just like I did in the U.S. Army on guard duty.
I had to wake up some soldiers with hepatitis
to bring them liverwurst sandwiches at midnight.
Now I walk between 2 laughing fat Buddhas
who look like they know how to enjoy sandwiches.
